Julie Skiba

Special Projects

I found out about Sisterhood of Survivors almost 4 years ago while attending the Annual Susan G. Komen Survivors Lunch. My friend Martha told me about the group and invited me to attend the SOS Luncheon the following week. I really liked what I found – a wonderful group of ladies who have a positive outlook on life. I have been active in SOS ever since. Through my involvement in the monthly luncheons, planning meetings, fundraisers and events I have made some very special friends who I consider to be my sisters for life. I originally got involved in SOS thinking that as a 2 time breast cancer survivor I would have a lot to offer to the newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. At the time little did I realize that I would learn a lot from them as well as from the many activities and events associated with this wonderful organization!

I have been married to Stan Skiba for 35 years. I have the privilege of working with Stan and our 2 adult children, Shana and Brandon in our family-owned printing and promotions company – The Advance Group. The Advance Group is proud to support SOS and to provide the site for the quarterly SOS tote assemblies and as a storage location for the totes.

I was diagnosised in 1987. I had a complete mastectomy on my right side and went thru about a year of chemo. Back then, there wasn't much info or groups to join, so I more or less went it alone. My family was great and I had a wonderful Doctor. Janet Ames, my sisters sister-in-law kept asking me to come to a luncheon. I did, and I have been hooked ever since. The ladies are remarkable and I can't believe what our membership has accomplished. I enjoy our meetings, luncheons (especially when I get to be hostess). We support each other in a way that no one that has gone thru this journey can imagine. I am married to Jim for 50+yrs, 4 children and 9 grandchildren. Great grandchild on the way. I am truly blessed with my family and all my friends at SOS.
