As the holidays approach we would like to thank you for your support during the past year. We are very thankful for our volunteers and supporters and wish you all a very joyful season.
Our next newsletter will be published by January 1, 2012 and will be filled with updates and resources.
We would like to leave you with a blog written by the daughter of a woman one of our volunteers delivered a tote to this fall. This information was taken from her BLOG.
*****
When breast cancer first came into my life I didn’t realize there were so many support groups that helped new women through it. After a couple of months of learning about breast cancer I decided to volunteer for Susan G. Komen. I sent in my volunteer application and was quickly contacted by a woman named Sharon. Her email (that I still have) explained that she felt the need to reach out. She told me a little of what she went through and sympathized with what we were going through. At the very end of the email she wrote, “Please give your mom a hug for me…and know I’m sending one to you as well.” Although she was just a name behind an email, to me I felt like she was a good friend. Her words really sunk into me and in that moment I would have gladly snatch up that hug. I choked up and read my mom the email. It was comforting to know that she knew what I felt and that she got through it so we would too. A couple of weeks later I spoke to Sharon on the phone to go over volunteer information and she told me about different programs offered to women with breast cancer. One was called, The Sisterhood of Survivors. As soon as we hung up the phone I googled them and requested for a survivor to come speak to my mom and I at our home. The day rolled around and a pretty woman arrived with a pink tote bag full of brochures, scarfs, beanies, toothbrushes, books, and a bunch of other goods. All information that would be helpful to a new patient. She told us her story and let us ask her as many questions as we wanted. She was a strong woman with a full head of thick hair and no signs that she had ever gone through breast cancer. She inspired me and helped me feel like my mom was going to be just like her one day. My mom as going be that woman giving the tote bag instead of receiving it. The Sisterhood of Survivors not only do things such as that but they also have luncheons and get togethers. Although most women have family or friends to support them there is something a little bit different about relating to another woman who TRULY knows what they are going through. This is an amazing group of women and they are helping others feel comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation. They may be strangers, but they don’t care who you are or where you come from… they are women bonded by this one thing in their lives forming them into a sisterhood. A sisterhood of love, inspiration, compassion, strength, and SURVIVORS

Charyce's Promise Acrylic on fabric48"x36 2011 Leslie Batty met Charyce a year ago, October 2010, just before Leslie's bi-lateral mastectomy due to a breast cancer diagnosis. They were both 39 at the time. They met at Leslie's downtown art studio and Charyce came with a bag full of good info and some creature comforts to get Leslie through the ordeal. Charyce shared her recent experience with surgery, chemo, and more surgery and told Leslie everything was going to be okay. What struck Leslie most, more than anything, was Charyce's genuine heart to help her get through it. She was consistent, real, funny -- and it was very clear -- really cared and wanted to help. They became fast friends. Over the months, Charyce would call and check on Leslie and answer her my random questions, e.g. "What kind of pajama's should I take with me to the hospital?" Answer: "The kind with a zipper down the front." With her deadpan sense of humor always intact, she has never failed to remind Leslie of important events and luncheons, making sure Leslie was informed Making sure she felt valued. During a recent Young SOS dinner, Leslie asked Charyce how she got into doing this work. She recalled a moment in her experience with cancer when she made a promise to God that if He healed her, she would help others. Many people make promises to God when they're sick, but Charyce has followed through with a kind of gratitude and love for life that can only be the real thing. I want to honor her faithfulness and true heart by donating a painting of her to our fundraiser. May we all follow her example of love! We received wonderful news Friday, California Oncology will feature this lovely painting September 19 - 23, 2011 in their waiting room at in their office located at 6121 N Thesta Ave, Fresno, CA 93710, 559-428-7390. This is a wonderful opportunity for Sisterhood of Survivors. Information on the fundraiser will be available. |

Pink Power Mom Please pardon the personal note!
I am forwarding along a wonderful tribute available for any breast cancer survivors you know who are mothers/grandmothers that have made an impact in their community. Bright Starts/Kids, Inc., names Pink Power Moms from across the country each year and each Pink Power Mom gets to select a charity of her choice to receive $5,000 (along with a weekend of pampering for her and a guest).
In 2009, I was humbled to be selected as a Pink Power Mom and the Central Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was not only awarded $5,000, but has since been the recipient of a Legacy Donation for the next four years! (Not to mention, a tons of swag and a spa weekend at the Ritz in Atlanta!)
Please pass this onto your network and consider submitting a special and deserving breast cancer survivor from your community. If you have any questions, please feel free to cotact me.
With Hope, Jamie
